The Zen of Fulbright
The Unofficial Guide to Making the Most
of Your U.S. Fulbright Scholarship
The Zen of Fulbright

How does this guide differ from other Fulbright literature?

We believe one of the best ways to prepare for a Fulbright Scholarship is to hear Fulbrighters themselves speak candidly about what worked, what they would have done differently, and how you can learn from their experiences. The stories and insights collected in this book offer practical advice that encourages a fearless, proactive, can-do approach to the application process and overseas experience. We believe this spirit is what makes the Fulbright Program as successful as it is today.

I'm a Fulbright Program alumus. How can I get involved?

We want to hear from you! The more input we have from the Fulbright community, the more helpful the guide will be for future Fulbrighters. Check out our Get Involved page for more info.

Why did you write this book?

We are huge supporters of the Fulbright Program and want to pay forward our Fulbright experiences to help future grantees. As program alumni we are often asked by Fulbright applicants and new grantees for advice on how to get the most out of their applications and time overseas. The information provided by Fulbright and university resources is helpful, but nowhere does there exist an independent compilation, an unofficial Fulbright guide, that prospective Fulbrighters can reference to make the most out of their Fulbright experience. By the end of the grant period we had all learned so much about how to take advantage of the opportunities Fulbright provides. We want future Fulbrighters to start with this knowledge.

Is this book just for Americans applying for Fulbrights?

Though we believe the information within is helpful to all Fulbright Program applicants and grantees, the first edition of the guide is specifically tailored to American applicants and grantees of two fellowships within the Fulbright U.S. Student Program: the traditional study/research grant, and the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program.

Can I contact Fulbright alumni directly to talk about their experiences?

Yes! We encourage you to seek out Fulbright alumni to learn more about the program and how you can make the most out of your time overseas. Many of their stories are already in this book. Fulbright and its partners maintain online public directories of past grantees from the U.S. Student Program, the U.S. and Visiting Scholar Program, and the Foreign Student Program.

Will this guide give me the "secret" to getting a Fulbright grant?

No. There are no shortcuts to getting a Fulbright Scholarship: there is preparation, diligence, and willingness to dream big and reach beyond your comfort zone. If you are passionate about your field and willing to work hard at developing your ideas, this book will help you craft a stronger proposal and a more fruitful overseas experience.

Will this guide tell me everything I need to know to apply for a Fulbright?

This guide is designed to complement—not replace—the information supplied online by Fulbright Program administrators. We recommend familiarizing yourself with the official material before reading this book.
